Borehole Maintenance Tips

In Zimbabwe, where access to a reliable water source is vital, a borehole is not just a convenience—it’s a lifeline. At Skylake Borehole Drilling, we’ve seen how consistent borehole maintenance can significantly extend the life of a borehole and keep water flowing efficiently through every season. Whether you’re in Harare, Gweru, or the outskirts of Bindura, here’s what every borehole owner should know about keeping their system in top shape.

1. Schedule Regular Inspections

Zimbabwe’s varying soil types and mineral content can affect borehole performance over time. We recommend scheduling a professional inspection at least once a year. Our team at Skylake checks for declining water yield, pump wear, sediment buildup, and early signs of borehole collapse. Preventative inspections are far cheaper than emergency repairs.

👉 Tip: Schedule your inspection just before the dry season begins to ensure optimal performance when demand peaks.

2. Monitor Water Quality

Even if your borehole is producing plenty of water, changes in taste, colour, or smell could indicate contamination or buildup of minerals like iron or manganese. These can corrode pumps and stain fittings. Regular water testing—especially in rural areas with agricultural runoff—is crucial for both health and equipment longevity.

Skylake offers water testing services to detect potential threats early and recommend tailored filtration solutions.

3. Protect the Borehole Head

Many borehole problems in Zimbabwe stem from poor protection at the borehole head. Ensure that the borehole cap is sealed, the concrete apron is intact, and the area is free from animal waste or chemicals. In high-rainfall areas like Mutare or Chimanimani, surface runoff can introduce harmful bacteria or silt.

👉 Install proper drainage and fencing to safeguard your borehole from environmental contaminants.

4. Don’t Ignore the Pump

Your submersible pump is the heart of your borehole system. If it’s cycling too frequently, losing pressure, or making unusual noises, it could be on its way to failure. Avoid running the pump dry—this can burn out the motor. If you notice a decrease in water flow, call Skylake for a check-up before it becomes a full-blown breakdown.

5. Desludge and Clean the Borehole

Over time, sand and silt can accumulate in your borehole—especially in areas with unstable geology like Mazowe or Marondera. This can clog your pump and reduce efficiency. Skylake recommends borehole cleaning every 2–3 years, depending on location and usage.

We use industry-grade compressors and eco-friendly descaling agents to restore borehole output without damaging the surrounding water table.

Stay Proactive, Stay Water-Secure

Borehole maintenance isn’t just about fixing problems—it’s about preventing them. At Skylake, we’ve drilled and maintained hundreds of boreholes across Zimbabwe, and the difference between a borehole that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 30 often comes down to care.
